Meet an Olympic Medallist

From WAFA’s Ben Peden:

Allan Jay, epee individual and team silver medallist at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games is in town for a few days.

He will be dropping by UWA Fencing Club in Claremont (corner of Goldsworthy and Princess) on Wednesday from 7:30pm to say hello, and will be attending a WAFA barbeque on Saturday from 4pm onwards (Hackett Drive swimming jetties, south of Matilda Bay Tea Rooms).

My apologies for the short notice, but it would be good to have a big turn out for both these events. I note that several fencers are overseas or interstate at camps, but all fencers are welcome to attend both events.

For the barbeque, please BYO meat and any other specific preferences including drinks. WAFA will bring some bread buns and juice. If people could RSVP to this address for catering purposes then that would be useful.

Saturday 10 December session

This Saturday we will have our AGM and annual awards presentation. Instead of the usual sabre/foil split, the session starts at 1pm for everybody. We will do a little fencing then start the meeting around 2:00 – 2:30pm, hoping to be finished no later thatn 3:30pm so people have time to go the WAFA AGM at Cavaliers.

The next Activity Weekend will be held by UWA at UWA Claremeont on 17-18th September.

Saturday 9:30am – 2pm

09:30am Under 13 Foil – WAFA (non electrical)

First Time Parents Epee 3 hits – If you are a parent and never fenced before here is your chance to show your skills and have fun!!!

Sunday 9:30am – 3pm

9:30am Under 13 Epee Trial – (electrical) – Equipment: BYO or supplied by your Club!!!

11:00am Under 15 Foil – WAFA – (electrical) – Equipment: BYO or supplied by your Club!!!

1:00pm BBQ – Gold coin donation (Vegetarian option available). Fencing Quiz – Prizes to be won!!!

Darling Range Cup this weekend

The Darling Range Cup is an inter club epee competition hosted by Darling Range Fencing Club and Zen School of Fencing.

There are U/13, U/15 and Open divisions, with medals and trophies awarded. The competition is taking place on the 11th of September. The venue will be Zen School of Fencing Academy, Unit#8-12 Stafford St, Midland. This is not an official WAFA event, and hence WAFA competition registration is not required. Entry fee is $15 per competitor, per event. Entries must be confirmed by Friday the 9th September, by either phone or email.

Activity Weekend & Cadets – Additional Information

The main schedule for the forthcoming Activity Weekend can be found here, but please note the following additional information about this and Cadets, courtesy of Ben Peden at WAFA:

1. Refereeing. Steven Lim will host a refereeing workshop for all those volunteering to help out with the refereeing at cadets. This will be held from 1pm Saturday at the Activity Day, Excalibur Fencing Club, Annie St, South Fremantle. While it is not compulsory, it will be useful for those wanting to gain confidence in their skills and receive some accurate information on the application of new rules (eg. passivity);

2. Scoring and timekeeping. Mike Middleton will also be running a training session for scoring and timekeeping at the Activities day.

3. Weapons check. George Osgood will be at the Activity day on Saturday to help with equipment maintenance and to prepare for weapons checks for cadets.

4. Cadet entries. Don’t forget that entries close THIS SUNDAY. Entries to wafatournament@gmail.com. NOTE: ENTRIES ARE $65 (many people are paying too little as forms are out of date on website).

5. Cadet camps. All cadet fencers are invited to Excalibur Fencing Club for the next few Friday evenings (6:30pm this Friday 17 June). This is the final opportunity to increase your training intensity, meet your team mates, and work as a squad. All welcome. While this is non-compulsory, it is recommended that you come along. Remember to attend the Thursday combined squad sessions at UWA Claremont, and individual weapon sessions at Clubs also.

6. We are still keen to hear from more volunteers including potential referees. Please get in touch with any ex-fencers you know who might be willing to help out? Please e-mail Kay (kay.howard@iinet.net.au) or myself.

WAFA Activity Weekend 2

WAFA Activity Weekend 2 for 2011 is hosted by Excalibur Community Fencing Club and will be held on 18 and 19 June at South Fremantle Senior High School Gym.

Schedule

Saturday 18 June

12:30 for 1:00 start – WAFA Under 15 Foil (electric, lame bibs required)

1:00 for 1:30 start – WAFA Team Sabre – State inter-club competition

Sunday 19 June

9:00 for 9:30 start – WAFA Under 13 / School Foil (non-electric)

9:30 for 10:00 start – Sabre Doubles – 4 fencers on piste at once!

Sausage sizzle – hot dogs and soft drink; vegetarian option available; low cost lunch for fencers and parents!

11:30 for 12:00 start – Mixed Weapon Teams – 3 fencers, each use all weapons once each

1:30 for 2:00 start – WAFA Team Epee – State inter-club competition

Open Foil #2 Venue Change

Please note that the WAFA Open Foil #2, scheduled for Saturday 28 May, will be held at ECU Cavaliers, Mount Lawley with roll call at 11:30am. Please arrive early for warm up and preparation.

Epee and Sabre competitions will continue to be held at Belmont on Sunday 29 May as advertised. Don’t forget to get entries in by the Wednesday before.

Important WAFA Open 1 Information

The times and locations of this Saturday’s WAFA Open/U20 events (epee and sabre) have been changed because the Belmont venue is not available. The events are now as follows:

Epee – Saturday 2 April on piste at 11:00 at UWA (changed again!)
Sabre – Saturday 2 April 12:30 for on piste at 1:00 at Excalibur
Foil – Sunday 3 April 9:00 at Belmont (no change)

Unfortunately, this means it will not be possible to compete in both epee and sabre.

Excalibur Club Session

The Saturday sessions at Excalibur will still be run as normal. Although we would expect the numbers of young foilists to be significantly reduced, the club will still be open for those who wish to turn up.

Excalibur Masters Competition 2011

The Excalibur Masters Competition will be held on 30 April and 1 May this year. Previously part of the Fremantle Masters Games, this biennial event for fencers 30 years and over is now being run as a standalone competition. Medals will be awarded for overall places, and for each age group: 30s, 40s, 50s and 60+. Level 2 FIE equipment is not required. Conductive bib is required for foil. Entry fee is $25 plus $10 per weapon up to a maximum of $50.

Epee Sunday 2:00 pm

Team events to follow individual events, subject to numbers and time permitting. Teams drawn by random selection.

With the start of the school year, fencing is about to restart at Excalibur. The first day the club will be open is Friday 4 February. The full set of term dates is listed in the Programme page.

Australian Cadet Championships 2011

The Australian Cadet Fencing Championships are to be held in Perth this year. The draft programme can be found here. In order to make this event a success, many volunteers will be needed. The details of the volunteer positions can be found here. A WAFA General Meeting is to be held on 29 January at which this will be discussed; details are here.

Epee competition 14 November

The Darling Range Cup will be held next weekend. It is an epee competition and the divisions are U15 and Open. The times are 9:00-12:00 AM for the U15s and 12:30-3: PM for the Open. Fencers of any level are welcome to participate. The entry fee is $10 and medals will be awarded. The address is 6 Stafford St, Midland. Competition next weekend

On 23 and 24 October, the final WAFA Under 15/Cadet competition will be held, plus the Inter-Club Sabre Teams competition (all ages and genders). The schedule is:

Saturday 23 October: 9 AM U15/Cadet Epee, 1 PM U15/Cadet Sabre
Sunday 24 October: 9 AM U15/Cadet Foil, 1 PM Club Sabre Teams

This is at the usual Belmont location. Please contact Jon by Wednesday if you want to take part in these events.

Next Saturday, 11 September, will be the final Saturday session held at the club this term, and the usual end-of-term club competitions will be held. The following Saturday, 18 September, will not be held at the club. Instead, we encourage you to participate in the Activity Weekend and its associated competitions.
